Description

The national flag of France, known as the "Tricolore" (the Tricolor), consists of three vertical bands of equal width colored blue (left/hoist side), white (center), and red (right/fly side). It was officially adopted on February 15, 1794, during the French Revolution, and stands today as the sole national emblem defined by Article 2 of the French Constitution. Orientation: The stripes are strictly vertical. Horizontally arranged stripes of the same colors belong to the flag of the Netherlands. Proportions: The standard width-to-length ratio of the flag is 2:3. On civil and military buildings, the stripes are of equal width. However, the French naval ensign uses a proportion of 30:33:37 so that the stripes appear equal when rippling in the wind at sea. Color Shades: In 1976, President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing introduced a lighter version of the flag to better match the flag of Europe. In 2020, President Emmanuel Macron restored the traditional, slightly darker navy blue shade, though both versions remain valid and widely used today Core Symbolism of the ColorsThe meaning behind the colors is deeply rooted in both royal history and revolutionary politics. Blue: This color has been associated with France since the Middle Ages. It historically links to Saint Martin of Tours and was a prominent feature on the ancient royal coat of arms. In the context of the flag's creation, blue is also one of the traditional colors of the city of Paris. White: Long considered the traditional color of the French monarchy and the Bourbon dynasty, white represents peace and divine right. Its use in military flags dates back as far as Joan of Arc. Red: Associated with Saint Denis (the patron saint of Paris), red is the second traditional color of the French capital. It historically appeared on the oriflamme, the ancient battle standard of French kings, and later came to symbolize the blood spilled by revolutionaries fighting for freedom. The design of the flag originates from a revolutionary cockade (a circular knot of ribbons) popularized in July 1789, just days before the storming of the Bastille. The militia of Paris wore blue and red badges to show their allegiance. When the Marquis de Lafayette was appointed commander of the new National Guard, he added the royal color white to the design. This combination symbolized an alliance and national unity between the King and the people of Paris. The legendary painter Jacques-Louis David later assisted in finalizing the vertical layout we see today. Modern Interpretations Beyond its original historical meaning, the three colors are widely associated with the famous French national motto: "Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity):Blue represents liberty and freedom. White represents equality. Red represents fraternity and brotherhood.
